Ekbom was Pittsburgh's 6th round pick (181st overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
He won a silver medal and was a stand-out in the 2008-2009, U-20 World Juniors tournament with Team Sweden.

We asked Ekbom, a potentital top-6 NHL defenseman in the future, which big league player he compares himself to.
He answered, "Jonathan Ericsson of Detroit".

It remains to be seen whether or not Ekbom or the recently signed Joe Rogalski will get to see any playing time in WB/S due to the surplus on the blue-line.
