All quiet on the Penguins front. But there are two really good reads out there today.
1. That Columbus beat writer who probably is more well known outside of Columbus than in, had a great piece on the Rick Nash fiasco. [ Blue Jackets Extra ]
Howson won’t give him up until he gets market value, and his trade partners — the six clubs on Nash’s approved list — are offering only what they think is fair.
Scott Howson is literally the worst.
2. Second best read today is from Michael Russo, who just owned coverage of the Wild's pursuit of Suter/Parise. [ StarTribune ]
"The first two days were extremely stressful," General Manager Chuck Fletcher said. "I remember thinking well into July 2, 'We're out, we're done, we're dead in the water, we've got to make a trade.' I didn't have any feeling that we were a favorite or on the map. I felt we weren't there."
Crazy article. You'd have to wonder what it was like for Ray Shero.
Good stuff from Adam Gretz on the Penguins search for a Winger for Crosby. [ EyeOnHockey]
Doan, even as he gets into his mid-30s, is still a productive player and having worn a "C" on his sweater for the past seven years in Phoenix would bring leadership qualities to any locker room he joins. But he's still undecided on whether or not he wants to return to Phoenix, and there should be legitimate on-ice questions as to whether or not he still has the speed or skating ability to not only play in the Penguins system, but to also keep up with a player like Crosby every night over the course of a full season.
And then there is Semin.
And speaking of Semin, Pension Plan Puppets defends him. [ ppp ]
Ok so Semin is a floater?... He's lazy and doesn't know how to back check? Am I getting this right? Let's review Semin's SA/60 for the past oh... 4 years or so, and while we're at it I'll compare him to some forwards who most people likely agree are GOOD defensively:
So yeah, he's no Datsyuk or Backes, and he's a shade behind Kesler and Bergeron, but he's got the same 4-year average as Zetterberg and he's ahead of Richards and St Louis. For those of you who are wondering, the mediane SA/60 for NHL forwards who played 30+ games this past year was 26.6; 27.1 in 2010-11; 28.7 in 2009-10; and 26.8 in 2008-09.
We've somehow warmed to both Semin and Doan. Basically because anyone is better than TK on Crosby or Malkin's line.
