Trade: Sabu for Garon
The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired goaltender Mathieu Garon from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for goaltender Dany Sabourin, forward Ryan Stone and a fourth round draft pick in the 2011 Entry Draft, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.
Another quiet Ray Shero trade that makes sense.
Ryan Stone sucks anyway.
Garon won't light the world on fire, but he may be an upgrade over Sabu.
Mathieu Garon led the Oilers last year with 26 wins.
He is a free agent after the season.
Per his [Wikipage] a little history:
Garon did see action with the Canadiens before being traded in 2004
with a 3rd round pick to the Los Angeles Kings for Radek Bonk and
Cristobal Huet. He became a restricted free agent during the 2006
off-season and on July 17 2006, accepted a one-year, $1.216 million
qualifying offer from the Kings.
Following the 2006–2007 season, Garon became an unrestricted free
agent and on July 3 signed a two-year, $2.2 million contract with the
Edmonton Oilers. As a result of his low goals against average, high
save percentage and four shutouts in the 2007–2008 season, he
essentially replaced Dwayne Roloson as Edmonton's starting goaltender.
Upon suffering an ankle injury late in the season, Roloson took over
once again.
Garon was the top shootout goalie in the NHL in the 2007–2008 season,
having stopped 30 of 32 attempts for a perfect 10–0 in shootouts."
By all accounts he was having a down year for the Oilers posting a 3.17 GAA, and going 6-8 in 15 games played. His save .913 % is a slight upgrade over Sabu's .898%
Regardless, Garon is just a little more experience than Sabu. He has been a number one goalie with the Kings, and Oilers.
