Gameday 44 - Bruins

Know Your Enemy: Days of Y'Orr and Something's Bruin
Look on the brightside, the powerplay sucks, they take games off and yet, despite their worst efforts, they're still in first place. That's the silver lining. But that doesn't excuse the shitty play the Bruins tend to fall into from time-to-time -- almost on a nightly basis if feels like sometimes. We hate sounding like a broken record but the Bruins not fighting for 60 minutes is the Bruins #1 problem.
So yes, it's January, and standings really don't matter at this point. They're nice to look at; however, what's nicer to look at are the team's games-played stats, the Bruins' IR, and the new kids' stats. If you don't believe it, go look at Trent Whitfield's stats from last year - and then thank your lucky stars he's starting for Providence tonight and not Boston. Danny Paille is to this year what Whitfield was to last year; Paille hasn't lost any part of his game, but for a little perspective, he played in 74 games last year. The Bruins are in better shape by far this season; don't let the midseason points total mislead you.
Last meeting with the Pens: November 10, 2010 - Bruins 7-4.
In our recap we said:
Expectations going into games are so high anymore that any loss is looked at as a dismal failure. But this one was exactly that. Pens were cruising. Start of a stretch of 5 home games in their next 6. The crowd was sort of pumped. Pens had a 4-2 lead going into the third. But then the collapse happened, with no warning. Fingers being pointed at GoGo, Michalek, Bylsma. Hopefully David Morehouse gets blamed somehow. Bruins are a solid hockey team. The Pens aren't.
Season series: Bruins Lead 1-0

Pens Notes:
Dustin Jeffrey has been called up from WBS.
Bruins Notes:
Mark Stuart has been placed on injured reserve.
Matt Bartkowski has been called up from the AHL. He's from Pittsburgh.
Marc Savard has an issue with Matt Cooke for some reason. We can't remember why. Neither can Savard.

From reader Jon:
I thought you guys might be interested to know that the Bruins just emergency recalled defensemen Matt Bartkowski from Providence for tonight's game. I played with "Bart'' in high school at Mt. Lebanon and he absolutely dominated. He would come off the ice maybe once or twice a game no exaggeration. We won a state championship his senior year 2006 and only let up 13 goals the whole season thanks to him. Anyways, Go Pens!
A great shot of the Igloo from the game against the Wild:
We'll take this game as an excuse to post this:

Tim Thomas leads the league in GAA, save percentage and shutouts.
He's probably expecting to have a good game tonight.
"I don't think so Tim."

Do It.
Go Pens.
