The Perfect Storm will come to a climax tonight.

It's Halloween.
The Pens are playing Columbus.

"Monster Nash" references will be handed out
like, well, free candy.

After the jump is the worst goaltending performance of the decade.

And we also found where Malkin strained his shoulder.
Exclusive information.

jesus

On the first goal, Howard is high.
On the second, no clue how a goalie ends up at the faceoff dot.

Somehow, an NHL goalie falls over himself on the third goal.
Then slides way out of position to let Hemsky stamp the net.

We thought Price's breakaway effort against Kunitz was bad.
No clue what Howard was thinking on this fourth goal.
Just totally unprepared.

The best part was after the goals started pouring in,
you could see Howard looking to the bench, waiting to be yanked.

To cap everything off for the defending Cup runners-up,
they've lost Valteri Flippliiuulla to a broken wrist.

Just another built-in excuse for an achieving (not underachieving) team.

We did some sleuth work and found the origin of Geno's shoulder sprain:

errrghh

This is nothing but good news for the Pens...and for Ovechkin.
He'll probably be able to breeze to the Art Ross now.

Disco is really showing what his balls are made of in this situation.

There's new players on the team left and right.
You've lost your top defenseman and one of your elite forwards.

And you have an away-home back-to-back scenario this weekend.
Conventional thought says start the backup at home.
Disco says suck it.  The adversity starts tonight.
Then again, it may feel like a home game in Columbus.

Here you go, Geno:

Thanks for carrying the Pens.  Get Well.
Like you're reading this.

Quick thought:  Gonchar and Malkin out.
Saving themselves for Mother Russia's chances in the Olympics?

No way.
A Penguin player would never put his country's Olympic hopes before his own team's.
Sorry, beast.  Had to do it.

go pens

Not with that goaltending, dickmilkers.

I cant wait until noon. At work until then, then off to columbus. I think we are going to try and hang the flag on a wall a mozaik or something. You will be able to find us. I hope some of the people from the carolina trip make it. Whistler, The Greek, Docc8? There were a ton of other people that I was too drunk to remember their names. If anyone is having trouble finding us shoot me and IM at trmsocool13.

The Red Wings suck right now.
The Flyers are turd soup and just lost Randy Jones to the Kings on re-entry waivers.
All I need is for Ovechkin to take a skate blade to the dick or something and I'll be a happy lad.

What's really crazy is the Red Wings are tied for 27th in Goals Against with Edmonton, only ahead of Toronto and LA. And LA has played 3 more games than them. Toronto one fewer, but they're worse than Nickelback. Edmonton has a game in hand, too. I at least expected decent D from the D. Guess it's too cold.

and while I am thinking about it; I'm pretty sure Randy Jones getting claimed was by design...they've been wanting to dump his over-inflated, jagoff Holmgren contract for a while. I still don't see how someone that stupid still has a job.

Yeah, Don Waddell and Paul Homgren still continue to defy the odds by keeping NHL employment. I really do not understand how they keep their jobs.

The Flyers may have been trying to dump Randy Jones but they just had to expose him to re-entry waivers as a call-up to replace somebody with an injury. So while they may have been trying to dump him, they still have to eat half of his contract. Not an ideal way to lose him but certainly an ideal way to acquire him.

Speaking of Columbus, would you believe that last year BJ fans were talking shit to me outside the arena after their team squandered a 3-0 lead in the third and salvaged a shootout win?

After they watched their arena get absolutely dominated by Pens fans?

They were celebrating like they actually won something. I was at the shootout win against Florida last week. Things were looking bleak. Given the way we started that game, I was just glad we won. I couldn't imagine trash talking in that situation. Unless maybe it were the Flyers. . .

I don't care how much up and coming talent the Blue Jackets have. . .their d-bag fans still don't know hockey.

I agree. After last year, it will take one hell of a nose dive for me to start worrying. Also, in looking at the East (I know it is early) there are only 10 teams that are even decent imo. There will also be a silver lining (like GoGo getting PT last year) with our young guys getting a chance.

Honestly, and you can job me for this all you want, I felt bad for the kid (Howard) last night. And UGH, I hate Holmstrom...random, but necessary.

Thanks for covering my ass, guys. Yeah, WBS leads their division through eight games. The nearest competitors have all played nine games.

WBS plays again in Manitoba tonight (I certainly hope it's not another 1-0 overtime game, though I want them to win again), but just because the team leads the division with 10% of games played doesn't mean jack.

As we've seen, injuries to the parent club can sap the farm of its prime talent (Chris Conner led the team in points at the time of his promotion). Also, the chief rival of WBS, Hershey, got its primary weapon back the other day when Alex Giroux, serial ringer and cherry-picker, was demoted from Washington to the Bears, so with him back, Hershey could turn back into a juggernaut again.

In the spirit of ganging up, I will chime in on this too:

I know what you are trying to sell, but I'm not buying it. Yes, we saw what Geno did for one prolonged stretch with Sid out, but those 2 seem to feed off of each other. Additionally, seeing how Sid almost single-handedly raped Washington right out of the playoffs last year and went punch-for-punch with Ovechkin, I cannot understand how anybody would rather have Sid out of the lineup over anybody short of God or Buries It (which to Mario=God is one and the same). Both players step up and dominate when the team needs it, so I wouldn't worry about Geno being out instead of Sid. While people are so quick to point out that Geno brought it up a few notches when Sid was gone for a prolonged period, we have yet to see what Sid can do with Geno out for a while. Now's our chance to see it and I say we should watch with great anticipation.

It may have been overkill to post that, but I liken it to stealing your wallet after akus and Rage knocked you to the ground and concussed you.

Can I tell you a sad tale? I occasionally get free tickets to see the Bears, so I go. I got to go to two games last year, and I knew who Giroux was and what his number was. Sadly, last week when I went to a game NO ONE KNEW if Giroux was up at the big boys club or down playing. Even I know he was their top scorer - and I'm not even a fan of their team!

Based on my observations of the guy, here's what I've seen. The man has exceptional offensive skills. He has some pretty good size, standing 6'3". The thing about him is, I don't see him exerting much effort on the ice...yet he scored 60 goals last year. It's like he lumbers around, looking for the good scoring areas, and waiting for the puck to come to him rather than working to get the puck himself. He also has a nasty habit of hanging around the opposite blue line waiting for home-run passes from his defense when they force turnovers.

It comes down to this. If you were to combine Alex Giroux's offensive skills and size with the effort that, say, Keith Aucoin puts forward at all times on the ice (or even Chris Bourque when he was with the Bears), you'd have the foundation for a damn good NHL player. As it is, I don't see that effort, and apparently Boudreau doesn't either...which is why Giroux was exiled again.

Despite it all...Vegas has the game close to even (Penguins +110 moneyline) when you factor in home ice.

I give the Bears some credit. The building in which they play is a great building, and some of the things that the Bears do to present the hockey game have been stolen by the Penguins in recent years...most notably, the "WHOOOOOOOOOO!" set off by our PA guy after goals and the pre-game coach's interview played on the big screen.

Oh, and...don't ever admit to anyone in c-blog that you're a n00b. C-bloggers have a way of ganging up on n00bs.

The game in November will probably be my kids' first real hockey game. Seriously, I might buy some bear claws just to keep them entertained so I don't have to leave before the game is over. They are 2 and 3 years old, so I hope there is enough going on to keep their attention.

When I heard Geno would be out, I assumed that Staal would be bumped up to the 2nd line and Adams to the 3rd line. But now I am curious about this: With the chemistry the 3rd line has, why not promote the entire line in the absence of Geno and let them play their puck control game for an extra couple minutes per game? Perhaps with TK out of the lineup it is a moot point, but should they do that when TK is back in?

Not saying that his diminutive stature means he should be fear-stricken on the ice. I'm just saying that his game isn't as well tailored for 4th line duty as some others on the roster. I would assume that he'd be fearless to be playing in the NHL (even in a limited role) at his size. But being fearless doesn't directly translate into "should be on the 4th line."

While I beleive Sid and Geno are 1 and 1A, I'd rather have Sid hurt than Geno. Sid's play is very consistent whereas Geno plays possessed when Sid is out.

Yeah, but you fail to understand that this is clever for a Habs homo fanboy. They like to talk about the rich tradition and fall back on all the Stanley Cup titles, but ignore the fact that their team has 1 Cup in 2 decades now.

Besides, you can't expect much from a group that gets all butthurt over the mention of a can of Campbell's.

Hm. I want to address this. The "Habs" were one of 6 teams that started the NHL and have been around now for 101 years? How many years were there just 6 teams? How many years did you get the "cream of the crop" because there weren't other teams to soak up talent? How many years did you win the Cup because of this? "Congrats. You won the cheap way. Bravo."

We went through years of complete and utter terribad hockey and nearly had our team ripped away from Pittsburgh. I don't live there. I live in Reno fucking Nevada and I STILL felt the pain and heartache. I read this blog and the Pitt Post Gazette a hundred times a day praying that the Pens would stay.

So to you, "HabsRule", go back to being a dick toucher. Enjoy your less than mediocre team this year and weep in greater amounts! The bridge is that way!

Wait, a Habs fan is bitching about first round picks? Are we talking about the same team that used to have that bullshit "cultural pick" for the better part of the 60s that allowed them to pick a French Canadian player before any team was allowed to make a single pick? In fact, the Habs had the first TWO picks in 1969 before any realized what a fucked up rule this was. You want to talk unfair? The Habs won the Cup in 1968 and this rule still allowed them to take the top two picks at the 1969 draft.

You guys are pathetic!
If we had 10 1st round picks, year after year, like you losers did, we would be a powerhouse team as well.

Congrats! You won the cheap way! Bravo.

How do you say "Woooooooooooooo o" in French?

Are you....are you serious?

(That, folks, is the text representation of a stunned c-blogger.)

me=stunned

Looks like the NHL has been poorly managed a lot longer than we thought. If Bobby Clarke reads that his head might explode.

Sidney Crosby will be a guest on Jim Rome Is Burning today at 4:30 pm on ESPN.

I think that was yesterday. At least, I watched it yesterday. It wasn't that great, Rome doesn't know anything about hockey and Sid is a master Jedi at nicely saying nothing.
