GeoCities - home to thousands of awesomely retro animated gifs and never updated personal web pages - is officially closed as of today.

As a way of saying goodbye, we suggest you check out our old post on GeoCities, Tripod and Angelfire pages.
Some of those pages may even still work.

And, the next time the Pens score, you might want to play this.

Today is our ode to GeoCities.

There's something amazing about the old GeoCities sites that will die today.
For anyone who was on the Internet in the mid-to-late 90s, GeoCities pages probably took up a large percentage of your life.

The number of old school wrestling sites, hockey fan pages and band tribute sites online decreased significantly today.

After the jump, a big Rob Scuderi hit, the Pens dress up for Halloween and more Geocities goodness.

Rob Scuderi delivered a big hit on Jason Chimera last night.

Was it too low?

Will the NHL care or will they ignore what the infraction actually was and make their decision based on star power, as they usually do?

Eric Godard was a Care Bear and Marc-Andre Fleury was Kermit the Frog.

"For some reason he is always wearing tights with his costumes... I don’t know why that is. He was Cat Woman before and now he was a frog with leggings so maybe it just means he likes to wear tights. I don’t know."

-- Sidney Crosby on Marc-Andre Fleury
Let's be honest. If Fleury and Talbot weren't on the Pens, how much would we job them?
Though they'd probably be too busy winning the Stanley Cup to read our blog.

So we love them.

Speaking of Halloween...

If you have a Pensblog or Penguins related costume, send it to us.
We'll be giving away some t-shirts and stuff for the best costumes.
We've got a lot of great carved pumpkins so far.
We'll post them soon.

So much pigeon. I like it.

I began a long journey through the bowels of the internet via all those old links. As a precaution, I kept a tab open to tPB as a tether to the present. One particular gem has made the adventure so far completely worthwhile:

I wasted so much time with GeoCities a few seasons ago making a webpage for my brother's hockey team. I had news updates, stats, rosters, and game summaries. I don't even remember why I volunteered to do it, but it was legit-oris.

I love the NRM (National Record Mart) ad on the Southpointe boards. I used to be so pumped to get NRM gift certificates for Christmas. Maybe the new Ace of Base CD?

I once made a geocities site just to job my gym teacher that took the class way too seriously. it was awesome.

I wish eric godard had value outside of beating the shit out of opposing goons. between the carebear head and the red suit, the dude seems hysterical. but alas, his lack of hands will continue to haunt me.

go pens.

What a nice trip down The Pensblog memory lane. I looked at the recap of my favorite (well, almost favorite) game of the post lockout era, 12/11/06. The Pens came from behind to beat the Caps in a OT. I almost forgot about Ouellet, haha!

Just because it looks ps'ed and fake doesn't mean it is ... look at Mike Ricci (or don't if you want to keep your eyesight.) He looks like the Creature from the Deep or something but is actually considered human ...

About the lovely Scuds hipcheck, Campbell's excited because his guys have more time to figure out the suspensions. It was low and around the knees, but nothing like the Ott's, which was knee-to-knee contact. I think the fact that Chimera getting cut up by it makes it look worse. I'm a bit proud of Scuds, he has a decent hipcheck and doesn't get to use it much ... Chimera probably should have braced for the hit more because it was a bit more than obvious it was gonna happen. Wouldn't be surprised at the suspension because Scuds got so close to the knees.

It's a true shame to see geocities pass on. There is a certain mystique about them that will certainly be missed. I feel bad the newer generations aren't going to see the humor in old technology such as absurd GIF's like the pencil up there and VHS tapes with muffled sound.

#26 Mr. Man 2009-10-26 20:17
Wyshinski at Puck Daddy is pooping himself over the Scuderi hit:

"Was it bad?: Oh my yes.

Should you be mad?: No doubt about it.
"

Now compare to the Leadership hit:

"Was it bad?: It sure was.

Should you be mad?: Not especially.
"

He justifies it by calling Richards an "honest player" and that "the way Booth kind of stands up at right before impact probably negates the issue of intent." What a meaningless, idiotic sentence.

Scuderi definitely went lower than was warranted, but look at him afterward - he's shaken up and clearly didn't mean to cut the up. He seemingly lost an edge as he got low and went lower than he meant to. I dunno, maybe he completely meant to flip Chimera, but more importantly: You stink, Wyshinski!

That's what came to mind to me as well. From watching it live it looked at first like Scuds was on all fours. Then they show the other angle and you could tell he lost an edge. Clearly doesn't look intentional, but as already said... it was too low. Now if you'll excuse me.

I think you guys are right about this. So now the question is... did his amazing play in the playoffs and the last few minutes of the Cup get him enough star power to avoid a big punishment. After all, we know that what really matters in the NHL.

I really wish someone would do that to Leadership or Semin's boy friend.

I think the first and last time i ate Wheaties was 1991.

~~

Talked to a guy wearing the pigeon jersey today while i was at work.
Anytime i see someone sporting a Pens jersey ,150 miles away from the `Burgh, it's a good day.

~~

With all these hits and injuries it got me thinking.
If Sid got a shoulder injury, the result of a hit from behind into the boards by Ovie , we would all be up in arms.

Would we also react the same way if the hit was on Adams from Ovie? would it be different if the hit was from someone like Zach Parise, and he hit Sid or Adams and hurt either one of them.

me and usbzoso were watching a pens game at foleys in nyc 2 weeks ago. as we're leaving (after a pens shootout victory), we're walking down 33rd street, same block as foleys and the empire state building, and we see a guy working in a comic book store wearing a wilkes-barre baby pens jersey. needless to say, we were in the store talking pens for almost an hour.

Teeth marks and broken skin are obviously from the rabid dog that was on the ice just prior to the scrum that Letang and Hartnell got into. Duh. On behalf of outraged players and fans, our bad. WTG proving your point, you hot mess.

[Edit]:
PS nice work picking on our core players as being "blockbuster lottery draft picks". Its totally a shame that the salary cap works the same way for each team, isn't it?

I don't know, I think you have convincingly made your argument that crazy forwards who run goalies and take off player's heads is way better than top lottery picks. What a hater. lol

It's not our fault Philly trades away their #1 picks.
'98: Simon Gagne. Somehow still with the organization
'99: Maxime Ouellet. Traded to the Caps for a rental of Adam Oates.
'00: Justin Williams. Traded to the Canes for Danil Markov in 2004. Williams would be a point per game player in Carolina for several seasons, while Markov would play 34 games in Philly.
'01: Jeff Woywitka. Traded him, a 1st (eventually Robbie Schremp), and a jobber 3rd rounder for Mike Comrie. Comrie didn't finish the season in Philly, and was traded for an over-the-hill Sean Burke and the rights to uber-prospect Ben Eager.
'02: Joni Pitkanen. Probably one of the most solid defenseman Philly had this decade. Traded with Geoff Sanderson to Edmonton for a past his prime Jason Smith and the palindrome (Lupul).
'03: Carter and LEADERSHIP!! Still with the organization.
'04: Philly traded previously mentioned 1st rounder to Edmonton. Edmonton drafts Robbie Schremp, who has done nothing notable in his short NHL career.
'05: Steve Downie. Enough said.
'06: Claude Giroux. Remember him being solid in the playoffs last year.
'07: JvR. Looking good so far this season with 7 points in 7 games.
'08: Luca Sbisa. Traded for teh prongerez@!!!!1!1!1oner
'09: pick sent to Anaheim for teh prongerez
'10: Philadelphia selects....nobody. They traded this pick away too for Frankenpronger.

Good to see this organization is that fucking stupid to set back it's draft process 3 years for one player who is on the back 9 of his 30s.

Cheap shit is cheap shit no matter which players are involved. I was upset at Orpik's hit on Cole a few years back and thought he should get suspended. I hate seeing cheap shots and dirty hits. The NHL has said many times that they want to rid the game of that stuff but then they don't do it. Either shit or get off the pot. The league needs to crack down hard on this crap or be lenient on the players who enforce clean/fair play. Pick one and stick with it.
