We operate our daily lives under the following banner:
"If it doesn't concern us, we don't care."

If some hot babe is getting her purse stolen in a dark alley,
we pretend we're on our phone and keep going.

For all we know, the man and woman are in a plan together,
waiting for you to get into the alley and jump your butthole.

We always think everything is a trap.
That's why we're still alive.

But this Versus-DirecTV-Comcast-NBC-NHL shitfest is now hitting home.
The Pens-Blues game is on Versus tonight.

After the jump, we break this whole thing down
in less than 4 minutes reading-time.

Or try to.

These are facts. And they are undisputed:
  • Comcast is the parent company of Versus.
  • Comcast is charging big-time money for DirecTV to carry Versus, which DirecTV will not succumb to.
  • Comcast and NBC are up to no good, planning a merger, per se, to become a rival to the ESPN-ABC monster.
  • Versus will presumably be the ESPN of that Comcast-NBC deal.
  • This is why Comcast is keeping the Versus channel's balls in their court and in their mouth.
UPDATE 9:48AM:

"DirecTV initially said it was about price, that Comcast was seeking a 20% hike in licensing fees for Versus.  Additionally DirecTV has said it is paying more for the service than other providers.   But Comcast says that isn’t so and that the issue is that DirecTV wanted to move the package into some digital sports tier ghetto on DirecTV where Versus would’ve been available to six million fewer DirecTV subscribers.

Previously Versus was available to subscribers of the Total Choice Xtra package, where it was available to around 14 million on DirecTV who subscribe to that package at no additional cost."  LINK

As Pens fans, this is what our situation boils down to:
  • If you have a basic DirecTV plan, you aren't watching the game tonight.
  • If you have DirecTV and Center Ice, but live in the Pittsburgh area, you aren't watching the game tonight.
  • If you have DirecTV and the Center Ice Package, and are located outside the Pittsburgh viewing area, you aren't watching the game tonight.
  • If you have Comcast, you support terrorism.

So, who is to blame for this black hole in the viewing of Pens games? Is it DirecTV for not agreeing to pay an uptick in fees to air Versus? Is Comcast to blame, for charging that uptick in fees to carry Versus 'cause they know the value of the channel to the NBC-Comcast merger is going to skyrocket once the merger is a done deal?

Are we idiots to expect this Comcast-Versus-NBC deal will come to fruition before the Olympics in February? Is Comcast and NBC so diabolical that they would squash DirecTV customers out of some extra viewing of the Olympic games, not to mention all the OnDemand Olympic shit that Comcast will be able to pimp out?  Yes.

If this NBC-Comcast deal happens, Gary Bettman's decision to go with OLN/Versus coming out of the lockout will look like a genius move, albeit his only other options were ESPN for a lower price and the Lifetime channel.  The NBC-Comcast deal would most likely push the Versus channel into having a daily/nightly "SportsCenter" or "FSN Final Score" program, with the NHL being the network's exclusive sport.

Basically, Comcast jobbed DirecTV and DirecTV's viewers out of seeing NHL games and big MMA matches.  Bettman undoubtedly has the inside scoop on what's happening with Comcast and NBC.  Bettman and everyone in the world knows that this DirecTV-Versus business is hurting the NHL's ratings on Versus.

But is Comcast-NBC hushing Bettman from really being a pain in the ass about this whole thing because they're promising Bettman some more primetime slots when the playoffs come around, i.e., more than 4 games of the Stanley Cup Finals?  We don't know how all this shit works, but isn't Comcast losing money by jobbing DirecTV, since they are keeping one of their channels (and potential ad revenue) in the dark for DirecTV customers?  That's a bizarre move.

If you don't think Comcast is to blame,
take a look at this pic of the Wachovia Center, home of the Flyers.

What's that sign in the upper-right-hand corner?

Suck it, Comcast.

People that have Comcast are meh-meh about this whole situation.
People with DirecTV are jacked.

Not too sure about this part of your statement:

"If you have DirecTV and the Center Ice Package, and are located outside the Pittburgh viewing area, you're fine."

I live in Rochester, NY. I have DirecTV and Center Ice and there is definitely no feed for the game tonight on center ice. Were all in this together. Fuck Comcast! Anyways I'm goin to my terroristy supporting friends house to watch the game.

I agree w/deuce I thought Versus broadcasts were exclusive. I also live in upstate NY and don't think I have access to the game.

Just searched all of the NHL Center Ice Channels to find nothing. I don't even think than anyone from DirectTv is allowed to look at the Pens website today.

I too have DirecTV and reside outside the Pittsburgh market, but I don't see how I'll be able to watch it this evening. No channels are showing it besides Versus. I just clicked through all my Center Ice listings - nada.

It's Comcastic!

Yea, I don't see how living outside Pitt is going to help with an national broadcast game...hope to be wrong but can't see it listed anywhere!

#7 2009-10-20 09:12
You are sooo wrong. Vs. Is actually charging a really small increase. The problem has to do with vs being placed on premium tier of channels. Vs wants to be placed on a lower rung of channels so more people can watch but directtv won't do that. It's directv that's being the jerks here. This isn't abou cash for vs it's about exposure.

ALSO the NHL is NOT being hurt by this at all. The vs ratings have been up across the board bob the last weC fight and the NHL premiere set records for vs programming.
I have basic tier of DISH and we don't normally get vs but bc of directv being jobbers we are getting bs for free. Vs wants higher ratings not a onetime cash grab from those dirctv bitches.

#8 2009-10-20 09:13
Not to mention that center ice NEVER shows what's on vs because vs has nation exclusive rights. Center ice can only show local channels.

That's correct. If a game is shown on Versus, nobody else in the US gets it. None of the local FSN affiliates, not the NHL Network. Nobody. I don't even know who (if any channel) in Canada gets it.

I have comcast and I don't support terrorism (unless there was a way to turn the ginger retard into a suicide bomber and the detonator went off next time Bettman had sex with him) and I hate myself for paying those bastards every month
I can't get Direct TV
I hate the fact that Center Ice broadcasts all of the games in HD but Comcast won't rebroadcast them in HD b/c it would cost more
Tonight is the only time I getto watch hockey in HD
After the infamous SHHHHHHHHHHH games I did write in the memo line of my check to the thieving bastards HAHAHAHAHA Pens win again

Sorry Y'all, Direct TV sucks my balls. I guess Im the only one in the world that has no problem with Comcast. (besides the price)

Here's my thoughts on Direct TV
1. Im not signing a two year contract.
2. Um, no, Im not signing a fucking contract.
3. Get Charlie's dick out of your ears, I already said Im not signing a fucking contract.

Im in Scranton and I not only do I get Versus, NHL, MLB, & NFL, Networks. I get YES Network, Comcast SportsNET Philly AND FSN Pittsburgh, ALL in HD. Not a bad deal.

There is nothing better than listening to the Philly announcers on CSN Philly bitch and moan when we stomp the shit out of the Flyers.

All DirecTV subscriber are SOL for the game tonight, no matter where we live. I tried to watch the Rangers game last night, but becase it was on Versus, DirecTV didn't carry the feed, and because Versus is national, Center Ice didn't have it.

I have cable through Blue Ridge Communications and I can still watch a Monday/Tuesday of NHL and a Friday full of white tail hunting. Being a former Comcast customer when I lived in Harrisburg, I can say from experience that Comcast blows huge dick.

They refused to carry FSN Pittsburgh, but still blacked out games on NHL Network and Center Ice, because Harrisburg is a secondary sports market to Pittsburgh.

I love Blue Ridge. Their on demand service looks like a high school AV club put it together, but I get FSN Pittsburgh, Versus, and I'm still enjoying the Center Ice free preview.

Sucks to be you DirecTV'ers. I can sympathize.

Let me tell you my story here. I have comcast and I am screwed by them. They do not offer me a FSNP without charging me way too much and this month they have been running free center ice but they have NOT aired one Pens game this entire time. It's always blacked out

The best option for me is to go with the NHL's online deal and try to watch all the games on my computer. I was going to switch to direct tv last summer so I could get FSN on the cheap but then I heard about the Versus thing and didn't know what to do. So as of now I'm watching games on the computer with "free" streams.

Part of the problem for me is the fact that I can't get high speed internet cheap from direct tv and Comcast's is easy for me to get and it's faster than a Pens win over the Leafs. I feel for everyone in this shitty situation and I'm sure it's only gonna get worse.

FUCK THE MAN. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO O!

I have Cox Cable - the chosen provider of Mike Richards - and they carry Versus. Cox and Comcast are the 2 cable providers in my area so they are direct competitors. One thing I have noticed is that Versus often gets all fucked up when hockey is on - like the feed gets jacked up and will kick out for a few minutes at a time. Do any other DC area Cox subscribers have that issue? Yes, I fully expect to be jobbed for asking that last question.

Updated the post to appease "hockey fights ca."

Comcast wouldn't make a huge deal about DirecTV wanting to move Versus to a different tier of programming unless they had huge plans for Versus, which they do.

HOCKEY FIGHTS CA came firing with this: "I care about hockey and an espn like empire with hockey as the crowning jewel? Hells yeah"

The tidbit about DirecTV wanting to move Versus doesn't stop us from thinking Comcast is in the wrong, but thanks for that extra info.

I have Comcast, but where I live, there wasn't a choice; it's the only cable company serving Henrico County. FIOS is available now, but when they finally got around to offering Center Ice last season, there was no way in hell I was paying for CI twice.

I won't be around to watch tonight's game anyway. Have to wait around for Friday against Sid's mortal enemies.

I may be a terrorist and I despise everything that Ed Snider stands for, but I've never had the slightest issue with my Comcast service in the ten years or so I've had it and therefore I don't really have a good reason to switch as long as they keep increasing HD programming. My only complaints are that their prices are fucking ridiculous (though they dropped my bill by about $40 a month when I called and said I was going to switch to FIOS because it was cheaper - and I would have) and their Center Ice feeds in HD are seriously lacking. A lot of them are worse than standard definition and are actually so bad I've thought about cancelling CI.

The Directv situation is bullshit, though.

And jobbing comcast cause you hate Philly is stupid. Not saying the staff is doing that, I'm stating that letting the NHL/state rivalry cloud your judgement is narrow-minded and dumb

So far as I can tell, Directv haters on here need to get some information that isn't from 1999. I'm not going to strap a suckbag on their sack, but I didn't pay a dime for the hardware or in[******] joke cityation, our service has gone out less than my Comcast cable modem has over the past two years, and I can cancel at any time without fear of penalty.

I've had my problems with both DirecTV and Comcast which is why I don't really side with either in this fight...I see it as kind of arguing over which form of Hepatitis I'd rather have. I have had problems with both, so I don't subscribe to either. I don't think this issue is as one-sided as anybody is making it out to be.

Do I think DirecTV is trying to be cheap about this whole thing and is partly to blame? Sure, I bet they are.
Do I think Comcast is dicking folks around and trying to win a public relations battle? You bet your ass I think that.
Do I think Comcast and NBC are scheming to do something? Certainly. And considering both Comcast (not the Versus network but the Comcast company) and NBC have a history of dicking over hockey fans in the name of the almighty dollar, I believe they share more of the blame in this than DirecTV.

That all being said, I have Cox Cable and as long as Comcast and/or NBC don't pull this shit on them, I don't have a dog in the fight and therefore don't give a fuck. I get Versus, I get NHLN, and I can get CI.

I'll actually get to see a Pens game from the comfort of my own living room!!!! I'm living in "Comcast Country" and it sucks when it comes to catching Pittsburgh sports. My apartment building won't let me get DirectTV, so Center Ice is worthless here because I can only get it through Comcast, which blacks out the Pens (and Crapitols). Same thing for the Pirates. A local bar does have DirectTV and FSN Pittsburgh, so I watch most of the games there, but that can get expensive and there's something to be said for being able to jump up and throw things at your own tv.

Well, I am going back to the original comment of "if it doesn't affect me, I don't give a shit." And it doesn't affect me. I am in a market where I get Verizon FIOS TV and they have Versus so I am good. What I get screwed on is NHL Network. I can't get it unless I get the HD package. I don't have HD TVs and the NHL Network isn't even an HD channel, although they have an HD channel. But I am forced to spend an extra $120 a year to get that and some other BS channels I won't watch or can't watch. So that means when the NHL Network whores up all the Penguins games because they are the Stanley Cup Champs and have superstar players, I can't see those games. But thankfully I was able to give Verizon the old F-U with the help of my friend. He has a Slingbox-like device that streams video over the internet. He game me his password so I can watch these games through the HD package that he does have. F-U Verizon, I still get to see my Pens.

A) Why is there bizarre shit dancing on top of this webpage while I'm trying to post a comment?!?

B) I'm inclined to believe Comcast on this. Why are no other cable providers having problems carrying Versus? I have RCN up here in Boston. I guess it costs a bazillion dollars, but I've got Vs and NHLnet, and they're near each other on the channel listings.

During the playoffs in 07 (before I had cable) I went to a nearby bar to catch the Pens-Sens game. They had DirectTV, but VS was on some obscure channel they didn't get. Got the same thing at two other bars. I ended up listening to Lange over the net.

C) Enough already with the national broadcasts of Pens games. NHL Gamecenter Live rocks... I shilled out the money for it so I can do other shit, come home at 10 or 11 and still watch the whole game on my laptop (I don't have a real DVR for my TV). But every other game has been blacked out on Center Ice. Oh well.

I think all the cable companies might be in on it together to some degree to screw over DirecTV. If that's the case, there could be an antitrust suit.

I get Versus and NHLN because I have the sports tier package (and get them both in HD because I also have the HD package). If I didn't spring extra for the sports tier, I wouldn't have any of the "national" broadcasts. Would it be nice if Versus were offered to everyone on the basic cable tiers? Sure. But until they offer more than 2 hockey games and 2 college football games each week while packing the rest of their schedule with MMA, fishing, hunting, and Sports Soup, they won't be considered mainstream enough to get basic tier privilege.

I concur. The worst thing about Versus is that you have an 80% chance of getting Joe "My voice is like AIDS for your ears" Beninati doing play-by-play. The rest of the league can have that shit. The Pens are always on the big broadcasts because they win, they have superstars, and they are popular.

1. F Comcast.
2. F NBC.
3. F Bettman (other than obviously rigging the Finals so that Crosby could have the Cup).

There.

Now on a substantive note, this whole situation highlights the trouble with the conglomeration of media empires over the last few decades. Now you have near-vertical monopolies created when major nationwide delivery providers (Comcast) also own major (?) nationwide channels (Versus). News Corp. (Fox) used to own the largest share in DirecTV until 2006, while TimeWarner is affiliated with CNN and TBS.

There is an inherent conflict when cable/satellite providers also own channels and wish to promote viewership thereof. For instance, a provider may add free HD for channels it owns. And what Comcast is doing with Versus is the opposite--they're shaking down a competitor.

If anyone's to blame in this whole thing, it's our elected leadership and the assholes at the FTC (yes, the Federal Trade Commission--I'm not on an iPoop) who allow this kind of corporate cross-breeding.

All that said, F you sad little bitches. I'm watching the game in HD on FiOS at my homie's pad.

Everyone I know who has their TV and internet service hate it but can't afford to break their contract. For all who don't have Versus just watch the game streaming. Oh, anyone who has Comcast and thinks they are getting a decent picture should consult an Optometrist. When I was back home in Pittsburgh the HD looked so bad during the Islanders game I had to check to make sure my grandparents had hooked up their LCD correctly.

Not all HD is created equal. Comcast jobs you because they don't have the bandwidth to bring you decent, uncompressed HD quality.

I have Comcast and I don't have a contract. If I wanted to switch to FIOS I would have to have a contract, which is one of the reasons I stuck with Comcast. I've never had a problem with their service.

Actually I'd prefer FIOS but for two things: the contract, and that I live in a townhouse that I just bought/moved into and I didn't want my first experience with my neighbors to be somebody digging up their yard to in[******] joke city my cable.

Emrick sounds like he's in the throes of orgasmic ecstasy when somebody takes a slapshot (whether it is a goal, is saved or blocked, or even goes wide). That gets tremendously annoying and I am always forced to mute games he does because he is the definition of ear-rape.

Beninati really does not know the game well at all so he's a joke as a play-by-play guy. That coupled with his piercing voice makes me want to punch things so I mute him too.

My problem with Emrick - aside from the shrill voice - is that he gets excited over the most inexplicable things during the game while not really getting even more riled/excited about important shit.

If he's like this in his personal life, I imagine on Steak & Blowjob Day he yells out, "Oh boy, STEAK!"

#101 GinoBangsYourMum 2009-10-20 12:59
I have DirecTV, love it, have had it for close to ten years now. The reason I have it is because Comcast is terrible in my area. I found it to be sub par years ago in Indiana, PA and it stinks here in South Jersey (which is odd because this is "Comcast Country" "see barfjob".

But, because the only thing that I watch on TV is hockey, I had to have Versus so I have Comcast Limited Basic Cable as well. It's $10.88 a month and gives me a few crappy local channels that I do not watch as well as, you guessed it, Versus. The picture is grainy and my Comcast signal is tolerable about 75% of the time, but I get the games and it was the only solution that would work for me here in the Nations armpit.

Lastly, to all those who say your DirecTV goes out all the time, get your satellite aligned better. Since I have moved 5 times over the past 10 years, I taught myself how to do it because third party contract in[******] joke cityers do NOT always pull off the best job possible because they get paid by the in[******] joke city. If you look up "improving my directv signal" on that thing called Google there are lots of helpful articles and forums dedicated to it. My DirecTV only shuts off on me now if it's a true lighting storm. Rain/Snow haven't affected the dish since I started doing the fine alignment myself.

Go Pens. Feels like it has been a month waiting for tonight’s game!

#102 Annie S 2009-10-20 13:04
According to the Pens' Twitter, Billy Jaffe and John Forslund are calling the game tonight. So no Beninati and no Emrick! Though I don't actually dislike Emrick all that much - he's a lot more diplomatic than most announcers out there, even if his voice is annoying.

Oh, and 1) Comcast sucks. I've had so much problems with it in the last three months that we seriously considered dropping out of it before our contract was over. My parents have DirecTV back home, and we never had any problems at all in the three years we've had it. And 2) Princess Bride and Prince Humperdink FTW. That warthog-faced buffoon.

Do I get RAGE points for being a homebrewer? I have some honey blonde ale in secondary fermentation. On average I make 5 gallons of beer for around $25.00. Also, when a home brewer tells you they only do it for the flavor or the quality and not because it gets ya drunk, they are being dishonest!

I have Dish and I'm more than happy with it. It's cheaper than Comcast though you don't have anywhere near the amount of On-Demand programming. My son moved back into the house for a while and has Comcast in the attic. He's paying almost what I'm paying for one TV and no HD. To have Versus you do have to pay 5 bucks more a month for an upper tier package that includes History International, National Geographic, Military Channel, etc. (All the Dork channels that my wife laughs at me for watching)

I live in Millersville, PA, right outside of Lancster. I have Comcast and get CSN(read: Comcast sports net)not FSN.
If I get Center Ice, guess what? Pens games blacked out. If I get Gamecenter, guess what? Pens games blacked out. When a game is on NHLN you guess it, blacked the fuck out.

This is actually one of the few games I get to watch that isn't a shit-bag internet stream.
Apparently I live in some Limbo-type area where no matter how much I want to spend to watch Penguin games, it is near impossible.
Has anyone ever tried to find a working proxy to get Gamecenter working? If you haven't it sucks balls.

eh, really shitty situation. im sure comcast has been waiting for this situation to hit home for NHL fans. but this entire thing goes back to when NFL gave directv the viewing rights in a closed bid. pretty much the reason comcast played games with the NFL channel for two years.

its obvious comcast knows how to play hardball. but honestly, everyone should place their anger on the sports leagues (or teams) that sign any type of exclusive broadcast rights. the fact that you need one particular provider to view any sports game out of your market is just plain stupid.

*shrugs* I really can't job Comcast, they're pretty good to me here in the boonies for school. My roommates and I agreed we needed a package that carried all the hockey shit, and it's a reasonable price (especially since it's split four ways). We've had Comcast at home for years and they've been great.

There will always be corporate beefs so I'm just glad this time I'm on the side that isn't losing out. I've already had like six random classmates ask me if they could come over for the game. Sharin' the Comcast wealth? Maybe. But the redhaired dude in those commercials still needs to die.

Also, the iPhone will learn whatever words you use most often. I suggest typing "hockey" more than "hickey" will eliminate all such screw-ups.

We used to have it on basic cable here (as like channel 76 or something) until Jan 1 09. So now I can't watch games either. Lang all the way for me tonight. Something is wrong with the world when I, a student in South Carolina (where nobody gives 2 shits about hockey), can watch a Pens game on my basic cable while y'all up there in Pittsburgh (and other places where you pay to get channels that SHOULD get you the game)get screwed out of watching it? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm glad I can watch it. But that's messed up. Eff comcast.

Quoting deuce5189:
Not too sure about this part of your statement:

"If you have DirecTV and the Center Ice Package, and are located outside the Pittburgh viewing area, you're fine."

I live in Rochester, NY. I have DirecTV and Center Ice and there is definitely no feed for the game tonight on center ice. Were all in this together. Fuck Comcast! Anyways I'm goin to my terroristy supporting friends house to watch the game.

Nice to see someone else lives in a city full of bitter Sabres fans....

If you have Comcast, you support terrorism.

That's about right, having heard from friends in town about Commie-cast, and various bloggers roasting them, and the occasional dealing with them in regards to their cablemodem service of a client or three.

I have Dishnetwork sat-TV, and Versus is a) available standard on the Gold package, and b) I believe is currently available as a free preview till the end of the month.

This is how I got around the shitty situation.

THE Setup!
So Comcast owns VS. They made unreasonable demands to DirecTv to keep VS. The result is that DirecTv dropped VS. Comcast found a way to screw us again. VS coverage sucks but at least you get to see the game. My solution: THE Setup. Streaming the game online with my PS3, syncing up the radio broadcast to the video with MyHomeTeamRadio & pumping it through my surround sound. Problem solved and shitty announcing avoided. Fuck VS and Fuck Comcast. LET'S GO PENS!

Sounds like the heads of Comcast are astute businessmen.
