Sports Illustrated did a piece about Matt Cooke for this week's edition. [ SI ]

 

The article is the same old shit we've read 1,000 times about Matt Cooke. 

The best part of the article are the quotes from former and current players.

We decided to review the quotes:

 

First up:

 

 

We posted this once, but any chance we get to blast Daneyko, we'll take it.

They used the same quote from right after the Tyutin hit.

 

 

"I'm as crazy as this: The NHL [should declare] open season for one week on Matt Cooke. You won't get suspended. Then we'll see if he'll continue [dishing out cheap hits] for the rest of the season or his career."

What a hit, too.

Cooke does that now? 100-game suspension.

Another quote from a while ago that was in the article. Fat-ass had this to say:

Mike Keane

"Matt Cooke has found his niche and [plays] his role very effectively," says Mike Keane, who played 16 NHL seasons, including one as Cooke's teammate on the Canucks in 2003--04. "He goes out and hits Ovechkin, hits guys from behind. If he hurts Ovechkin, who cares? The Washington Capitals won't win the Stanley Cup. He did his job. For Matt Cooke, that's perfect."

This quote is everything that is wrong with sports. If Mike Keane would have thought this way just once while he played, he would have been shot. But now he is on some soapbox. Get real. What a world Mike Keane lives in.

"If people suggest our game is violent," says Brad May, the former enforcer who also played with Cooke in Vancouver, "Matt Cooke is one of the guys inciting this violence."

Wait. Wait just a minute here. Brad May says Matt Cooke is inciting violence?

Good to see the replays sucked back then, too.

More May:

"So many days I'd say, This guy [is] a factor; Cooke helped us win," says May, the ex--Canucks tough guy. "And other days I'd be icing my knuckles or my temple and thinking, I wouldn't have been in that fight at all except for that ass----."

So let's get this straight. Brad May just blamed Mat Cooke for 100% of his fights and the resulting injuries from those fights. Something tells us Brad May got into fights because Brad May was an asshole, not because of Matt Cooke.

May just wanted his name in SI.   Really embarrassing day for him.

 

 

We don’t have a problem with the article. Faber does his best to give Cooke’s side. The main issue is what you see above. How can some of these former players like Brad May and Mike Keane even be taken seriously?  Especially when they are two all-time scumbags.

     Do these former players forget what is like in the battle? When Keane played for the Av’s in the height of the AV’S/Wings rivalry you can’t tell us he didn’t try to knock someone out.

 

This even goes beyond those two, it extends to a lot of TV analyst now. Jeremy Roenick, Keith Jones, Mike Milbury, etc.

Mike Milbury beat a fan with his own shoe when he played. But now we’re forced to listen to his rhetoric about Matt Cooke being a dirty player. Yea, OK.

 

Matt Cooke is a dirty player, sometimes. Hockey players have an edge to them that no other professional sports players have. People have forgotten that, or they just don’t want to admit it.

 

Either way it needs to stop, but we have a feeling it is only going to get worse.
