7:30PM - Mellon Arena
Note that tonight's game is on FSN Pittsburgh, the NHL Network in the US and TSN in Canada. Because of the "national coverage," it looks like the game will be blacked out on NHL GameCenter and NHL Center Ice.
The Flames are leading the Northwest Division and they beat the Red Wings 5-3 on Monday. Miikka Kiprusoff has been in net for every single Calgary victory this season and he leads the league in wins. The Flames are third in the NHL in goals scored. They're also 24th in goals against. If you look up "Calgary Flames Fan" on Google Image Search this comes up on the first page:
We've been pointed by a couple e-mailers to a post Puck Daddy did back in late December that possibly was the first time a Crosby-TheRock comparison was made.
Unfortunately, the title had "Crosby" in it and it was on Yahoo.
So we didn't read it. And we still haven't read it.
So we can still sleep at night.
It is possible that all three of us homos had the same idea.
We are staking our claim on Crosby-Mr. Perfect comparisons.
Mark it down.
Over at PUCK DADDY today, there's a big-time post
about how Ovechkin is leading some online poll for MVP at USA TODAY.
The poll was generated by Kevin Allen polling 11 of his buddies
in some "power ranking" format.
Ovechkin received 10 of 11 first-place votes.
Zach Parise got the other.
A Devil getting an MVP vote?
You have to wonder if there's a Devils fan in the Professional Hockey
Writers Association who is trying to pull those strings.
Ovechkin's look-at-me style of play is what's gonna get him the Hart.
Out-of-market journalists will touch themselves when they see highlight reels.
Ovechkin's shooting percentage:
50 goals on 468 shots. 10.7%.
Almost lower than the Pens power play.
For comparison's sake, there were only 400 shots in the entire Civil War.
Can't say Ovechkin doesn't deserve it.
And you can't say Malkin doesn't, either.
Speaking of MVPs, we have one of our own this Tuesday.
This is Anthony B.
He was featured in the PD Crosby video.
And he has given us the breakdown on what went down
when PUCK DADDY visited Washington looking for Crosby fans.
There has been a storm brewing ever since the year has turned.
It will contuine to brew for years.
It will go on and on. Nothing will ever be solved.
So why waste time commenting on it?
Because it's 1:00 am on Tuesday morning and we don't know what else to do.
Greg W., a.k.a. PUCK DADDY, is a beast.
He is a professional journalist who has found
the right medium and the right style to talk with hockey fans. Solid human.
A recent post of his explored why Sidney Crosby is hated around the league.
It included a documentary video of sorts.
In the video, he asks Penguins fans in Washington certain questions about Crosby.
The video is after the jump.
And it's quite insulting on numerous levels.
The easy criticism on Sidney Crosby is he's a whiner, a baby, blah blah blah.
It's so easy to do, much like saying Greg writes about Bing to fish for website hits.
It probably isn't fair when you're easily labeled as something. Ironic.
Sidney Crosby sells, so write about him. Fine. But the minute you start portraying random Penguin fans to speak for an entire fanbase, then that's when we have a problem.
And it is not to say that any of these people in the video really said or did anything to misrepresent Penguins fans on the whole. The idea is genuine, but it's a weakly veiled attempt to humiliate Penguin fans. Remember: Puck Daddy is a Devils fan.
Case in point.
This guy was interviewed:
Out of the millions....mmmmhaaaa....and the millions of the Pens fans in Washington for a Caps game, Greg grabs this guy, two old ladies (who he subsequently jobs in his narration), a guy in a penguin suit, and some dude that was wasted.
We're itching to see which interviewees were left on the cutting-room floor
because they didn't play into the stereotype needed for the docu-video-mentary.
PUCK DADDY has definitely slanted towards catering to Crosby haters.
95% of his readers are in that boat. You can't blame him.
The worst part is the Crosby angle has adversely affected any talk of Malkin.
Isn't he leading the league in scoring?
Some pro-Crosby sentences are put into the posts to squash any question of bias.
But those sporadic thoughts are more worthless than Will Ferrell.
After the jump, you can watch this documentary video,
which has a familiar conclusion; yet another reason we are jacked.
Also, Pensblog reader SNYPER sends along the e-mail he sent to Greg.
The NHL season is quickly coming to an end. It seems like just yesterday that the Pens opened the season against the Senators in Sweden.
Evgeni Malkin was named the number two star for the week. He had three goals and five assists in three games last week. Cam Ward was the first star and Shane Doan was the third. Alex Ovechkin was too concerned with cooling down his stick and could not make the list.
The Toronto Star says that Crosby and the Penguins making the playoffs and succeeding there is good for the NHL.
"Having the Kid healthy and happy is good for the NHL – he sells tickets everywhere he goes, not only in Pittsburgh, where sellouts have again become automatic. Is there any more anticipated game than one involving Crosby vs. Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals?Add a comment
Hard to believe that Crosby, at 21, already is in his NHL fourth season. Harder to believe is that anyone might underestimate Crosby – it would make sense we have yet to see his best, right?
Yes, Ovechkin and Malkin are vying for the top individual offensive honours and claiming the headlines. But the best Canadian-born forward in the game is conceding nothing and, barring a total turnaround, neither are the Penguins, his Penguins."
Off-season to do list; get a petition to bring back one of the following jerseys:
Biron made some saves in this game that he's never made before.
The Pens didn't get a couple bounces.
The Flyers couldn't do anything even strength.
If you think the Pens are in trouble or something ridiculous
because of this loss, get off your fear-mongering pedastal.
The Pens are fine.
Were they supposed to go undefeated the rest of the season?
Speaking of jokes, how awful was the NBC announcing crew? Thanks to another radio delay, everyone had to suffer through Mike Emrick, Edzo, and Pierre McMguire, who was on some French kick when he was pronouncing Biron's name.
When Osgood isn't playing, Emrick is all right.
Edzo is a joke. McGuire does more than he should.
Being that the Crosby love is done, we had to suffer though two plus hours of Mike Richards love from Mcdouche.
And have you ever actually paid attention to Edzo's spotlighting of plays?
He makes observations that aren't even realistic.
Where is Bill Clement? Where is Steve Levy?
NHL would be better not even having a televison contract.
Not all is bad.
Judging on some pics we got in, at least some people had some fun:
Jump city for more details, a.k.a Read More.
Pretty much everything on the line.
No way in hell we're using a Flyers logo.
Start of a very tough week for the Pens.
Flames coming to town on Wednesday, and then the Rangers on Saturday.
Let's start things off right by jobbing Scott Hartnell.
And then there is this e-mail from CHRIS D.
attached is the "mask" scott hartnell photoshop autographed by scott hartnell. flyers practiced at rmu isc and a few of us who work there read your page and found it necessary to get that photo autographed. he laughed as he signed it.
That is how you job.
Evgeni Malkin had a disciplinary meeting by phone with the NHL today.
The meeting stems from a hit at the conclusion of last night's game:
If the league were to suspend Malkin the suspension would be announced prior to tomorrow's game against the Flyers.
We were at the game, which translates into a mud recap.
We were in C18 for this one.
Some bad asses in C19 started the MVP chant right off the bat.
We checked out the Yinz Cam on the iPhone 'cause we're technology whores.
It's pretty sweet.
Anyway, the Pens are playing like beasts right now.
Out of nowhere, they have a 21-11-3 record at Mellon Arena.
Where did that come from?
jump city for some poor recap work and pics.
