What we did
A couple of isssues
When the Penguins didn't have one of Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin on the ice tonight they managed to get 3 shots on goal. 3.— Adam Gretz (@AGretz) January 26, 2014
Two things to actually be concerned about
The Pens have now had "one of those games" twice in a week. These games have come with all their big-name defensemen back in the lineup, so maybe they're all still going through a feeling-out spell.
3. Kari Lehtonen -- Good shutout for him, but it wasn't worthy of the number-one star since Dallas had an amazing game plan set up. Pens had maybe three or four quality chances.
2. Jamie Benn -- Too good.
1. Sergei Gonchar -- The old man can still drop the bomb from the point. Got the game-winner in this one.

We caught this in Snowden's Q&A from Thursday the 23rd:
"The second, less understood but far more sinister effect of these classified programs, is that they effectively create 'permanent records' of our daily activities, even in the absence of any wrongdoing on our part. This enables a capability called “retroactive investigation,” where once you come to the government’s attention, they’ve got a very complete record of your daily activity going back, under current law, often as far as five years. You might not remember where you went to dinner on June 12th 2009, but the government does." -- Edward Snowden
So do we.

A lot of chatter around Kris Letang this week. A lot of it has to do with Dejan writing a piece in The Trib suggesting the Penguins should trade him. [ Trib ]
Also, a lot of it has to do with Kris Letang just being so damn polarizing.
At this point, trading Letang is a misguided thought in our opinon. There was a time to trade Letang; it was last summer.
The problem with Letang is that there is no middle ground. He either makes you really happy or makes you want to jump off the Smithfield Street Bridge. His defenders can't hear anything bad, and his haters can't hear anything good.
But we're out to find the middle ground, and over the last few games we've noticed a trend.
The lower the minutes, the better Kris Letang is evening himself out.
What we mean
Turnovers are damning for an NHL defenseman. The more you have, the worse it is going to be. This is especially true for Kris Letang.
But Letang has the ability to trade points for turnovers, which, honestly, is why he is so highly regarded. We built this chart out at sportingcharts.
We used the following parameters:
An interesting trend developed.
ONE POINT. 18 turnovers
* If any of our calculations are off, let us know, or if you build a better chart send it our way. Sportinggraphs is amazing.
It was ugly and beautiful all at the same time. In another wild affair between the Penguins and Islanders, the Pens held on barely for the 6-4 win.
Goals from Kunitz, Crosby, Maatta, Letang, Malkin and Sutter paced the Penguins. Jeff Zatkoff wasn't at his best, but he did what he needed to do at times.
This game was the final meeting between the Pens and Isles. The Isles are stuck at 49 points, about 7 points out of a playoff spot. What is really scary is that if by some chance they did make the playoffs, they would probably sneak into that final wild card spot, and that would match them up with the Pens.
Tavares didn't get on the scoresheet, but he almost single-handly helped the Islanders tie the game in the third period. He drew two penalties setting up a late five on three that the Islanders couldn't convert. Can't battle between him and Crosby all night. Special player.
This was one of Maatta's better games of the season. He had assist and this disgusting goal...
There was a moment in the first period that showed what Sidney Crosby is about. Down 2-0, and getting thoroughly dominated, Crosby gathered his line before a faceoff in the Penguins zone.
Right after that faceoff they scored to make it 2-1. He scored again a few minutes later to make it 2-2. Really a tough pill to swallow for the people that don't think Sidney Crosby is a good leader.
