Playoff Gameday: Pittsburgh Penguins & Ottawa Senators - Round Two, Game Two

Posted by Rick on .

Ottawa Senators @ Pittsburgh Penguins
Penguins Lead Series 1-0

NBCSN, CBC, RDS - 7:30 pm/et

Consol Energy Center - Pittsburgh, PA

The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Ottawa Senators quite handily in game one. Of course, they also defeated the New York Islanders quite handily in game one. Actually, they defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning quite handily in game one back in 2011 and the Montreal Canadiens in game one in 2010. In all of those series, they went on to lose game two. Winning game one means nothing. Teams come back stronger in game two.

The last time the Pittsburgh Penguins won a game two? It was in 2010, in their first round series against the Ottawa Senators. The last time the Pittsburgh Penguins went up 2-0 in a series? 2009 against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Can they do it tonight?

VIDEO: Ottawa radio station depicts killing of Penguins.

The head of Peta probably threw up on himself. If you view this video as just two strange bros killing Penguins in the front yard, it actually makes it funnier than the video's orginal intention.

Paul Martin Confidence Index in-your-mouth levels

The Paul Martin Confidence Index began back on January 14th.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2Py1TcH7fkg/UPOldb86PBI/AAAAAAACCSk/cnSwRjtAJzs/s640/Screen%2520shot%25202013-01-14%2520at%25201.16.14%2520AM.pnga

After a tumultuous season last year, the Pens needed a rebound year from Paul Martin, and they've gotten it.

Paul Martin has risen in these playoffs, as well. He has 7 points, tied for second-best among D-men behind Chara's 10. His +6 is third-best in the playoffs, behind Voynov and Chara.

He also has goals in two straight games now, including his game-tying goal in Game 6 against the Isles. During the season, we always say "Player X is gonna score a big goal in the playoffs." Well, that game-tying goal is up there in terms of big goals so far this post-season for the Pens.

And get this: Paul Martin is averaging nearly 26 minutes a night...and he has zero penalty minutes. Zero. That basically guarantees he's gonna take a penalty tonight in Game Two, so we'll also say that Erik Karlsson hasn't been called for a penalty while seeing 27 minutes a night.

Go Pens.

RECAP: GAME ONE. Tough Guys. PENS WIN.

Posted by TPB Staff on .

The best part of this game was when the Ottawa Senators emerged from the visitors' dressing room and the Islanders didn't. The Penguins immediately found themselves with time to make plays and make moves. Did you notice something else in Game One? The furious rushes up ice that were the Islanders' M.O. were gone. That drop in team speed between the Isles and Sens will make a world of difference in this series.

If the Isles series did a number in the Pens' heads, they would have lost this game. Instead they came out all business.

Vokoun saw 36 shots and saved 35. Money. The Pens had one shorthanded goal all season, and they now have one in the postseason. Suprise: Pascal Dupuis has scored both of them.

Evgeni Malkin put up two more points and recorded the game-winning goal. He was in so many places last night, he was even on Jeopardy:

"I'll take misunderstood, enigmatic Russian Conn Smythe winners and MVPs for $1400, Alex."

The best part: the joke who buzzed in answered "Sidney Crosby."

If there's one thing we've all learned, it's that the first game of a series doesn't tell the tale. Game Two on Friday night is gonna be a good indication of where this series is headed. It could be another tough win, it could be a blowout, Vokoun could collapse.
