Pittsburgh Penguins (31-10-0) @ Florida Panthers (13-21-6)
ROOT, SUN - 7:30 pm/et
BB&T Center - Sunrise, FL
It's the 1st-place team in the Eastern Conference against the 15th-place team. Will the Pens stay focused against a weaker opponent?
Season Series: 1-1-0
Last meeting that counted: February 26, 2013. Penguins lost 6-4.
What we said in our recap:
So much for being excited about Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun laid his second straight egg in less than a week. If you want to pay someone to fuck up, Brent Johnson was half the cost. Vokoun's spent so much time on his back lately, the grandma from Life Alert is worried about her job security.
The Pens didn't do him any favors, though. The Pens took a million penalties in the second period, and everything collapsed.
So, they've started a somewhat critical mid-season road trip with a bad loss. They did stage a fun comeback, but it was all for naught. Can't really figure out if this is a bad loss or "just one of those games." Doesn't really matter now.
Know Your Enemy: Litter Box Cats
What they're saying:
After allowing Winnipeg - not exactly known as a scoring juggernaut through 2013 - to hang seven goals on their collective head Thursday, the Panthers return home with a bloated league-worst 3.45 GA only to run squarely into Pittsburgh's first-overall offense.
Though the Pens have produced a mighty 3.29 goals per game, they haven't dominated Florida on the scoresheet this season: the teams split two games played thus far with each scoring seven times, though the Cats benefited from four powerplay markers (and a Tomas Kopecky hat trick) in a 6-4 victory on February 26, their last meeting. Since 2009, however, Pittsburgh has indeed dominated Florida in the "W" column, taking 13 of 17 matches, with six of those victories requiring extra time.
OT or not, these clubs typically pump out some memorable hockey against each other regardless of placement in the standings.
